In Preparation for Valentine's Day

... With three and four year-olds!

In my preschool classroom, we were busy bees this week getting ready for Valentine's Day! The kids make cards for each other at home, and bring them into school to "mail" to their friends on our Friendship Day (because, when you're three, it's really about friends, and not mushy gushy stuff).
We also always have a special snack. The kids get to decorate heart-shaped sugar cookies with icing and sprinkles, and our classroom gets a nice little coating of icing and sprinkles. We made Valentine's with the kids for their parents, and decorated bags for "mailboxes".

Since we have four classes total, it means four Friendship Day parties! I really had to get my sweet tooth and pink and red clothes ready! There is so much excitement in pulling out the cards they've made for their friends, reading their names one by one, and finding the corresponding bags. We also  finger painted Eric Carle style by mixing red, purple, and white paint.

Earlier in the week, the three year-olds worked hard to cut strips of paper into pieces for their "I love you to pieces!" cards, and we added stickers to the inside, where they also wrote their names.

To give to the three year-olds, my co-teacher made raspberry red and white, sparkly play dough hearts. The four year-olds are getting mini notepads, a pencil, and mini erasers. I made up some notecards to attach to them.

In total, there were 40 cards made for moms and dads, 400 Valentines given to friends, tons of cupcakes and sugar cookies eaten (and lots of fruit, too!), 40 red balloons, all part of four parties!

In our house, we're decorated with heart garlands, a yarn heart wreath, and a few other red details. We don't have much planned to celebrate, but I'm looking forward to spending the day together.

Our weeks lately have been busy with school, grad school, and progress reports for me, and lots of very long days for Rich due to coaching basketball, so our weekends have been a nice time to connect a bit!

Also, let's get real here... It's another weekend blizzard in New Hampshire, so we'll be snowed in. Again.  Sigh.  Is it spring yet?  In the meantime, I'll keep creating and writing and sharing! What are your plans for Valentine's Day?  Is it also snowing where you live?
